I Was Born To Make Mistakes /// PatternDaily

A few months ago I was contacted by Eliza Cerdeiros, the creator of the Motivational Monday project, to do a guest post. I said yes & started think of a motivational phrase to letter. As time went on I found myself struggling trying to come up with something. One day while at work I decided to listen to my Erykah Badu collection, especially since she’s coming to town in August as part of the Twilight Concert Series. I put the songs on random & two songs in “Didn’t Cha Know” came on & the line “I was born to make mistakes, but I ain’t scared to take the weight” hit me & I knew I had to letter it. You can buy this print on my Big Cartel Shop or My Etsy Shop.

I know I’ve talked about the Twilight Concert Series on this blog before… basically it’s one of the best things the city of Salt Lake has to offer. Every summer the City Arts Council continues impress me with the quality of artists they bring to the stage. This year the beautiful & inspirational Erykah Badu with grace the stage on August 8th.

My love for Badu began in the late 90s while I was working a record store. For months my best friend & coworker would pop in her 1997 debut Baduizm or Live album in during our morning shifts & jam our day away. Luckily the two of us were still working the same store when Badu released her 2000 release, Mama’s Gun. Whoa!!! The album instantly became a favorite! The track that seems to stick with me is “Didn’t Cha Know”, I always find myself relating to it with each listen.

In 2007 an opportunity the two of us thought would never happen, happened. Erykah Badu visited SLC! The evening blew our minds. We cried, we carried big ass smiles on our faces, it was a true night to remember. In 2008, Badu released the brilliant, New Amerykah Pt. 1: 4th World War, this to me is the record that could very well top them all.

Okay, okay, the fact that Badu is returning to SLC is a blessing in my eyes. Thank you City Arts Council.

Oh boy! The day has finally arrived, My Morning Jacket returns to the Salty City! My first experience with the band was ages ago (2002 it think) when they opened up for the English band The Doves on the tiny side stage at Bricks. I remember watching these guys with their extremely loooong hair hanging over their faces and looking at my friends thinking “WTF? Who are these guys?” Of course “these guys” had already released like three albums & went onto becoming a very big deal. In 2007 a rare thing happened, my husband wanted to go to their show at the Depot. You see, it takes a lot for my husband to go to a show, it was this moment that I knew the band had become something.

Salt Lake, you got to hand it to the City Arts Council for booking this band for the Twilight Concert Series, they did a mighty fine job & I thank them.

Also, please arrive early to catch Provo boy (by way of Nebraska) & major talent, Joshua James. He’s been listed on Paste Magazine‘s “Next 25 Artists You Need To Know”. He’s toured with Ani Difranco, John Mayer & has performed at various festivals like SXSW, Lollapalooza & Bonaroo. He is currently recording his third album which will be produced by Richard Swift (wow!!!)

Week three of the Twilight Concert Series features Band Of Horses with Lower Dens.
BOH have a song titled “The Great Salt Lake”

The Twilight Concert Series takes place every Thursday during summer in Salt Lake, it’s THE event most locals look forward to. Now in it’s 25th year the series can draw up to 33,000 attendees each week. Over the last few years we have seen artists like, Sonic Youth, Bon Iver, Black Keys, Neko Case, Modest Mouse, Sharon Jones, The Roots, Big Boi & others. This year the series implemented a new $5 entrance fee… well worth it In my opinion. The series even recived a stamp of approval from, pitchfork

Well, the locals have been waiting patently & finally the series kicks off tomorrow with an evening of two stellar bands, Baltimore husband/wife duo Beach House & Brooklyn’s The Walkmen. Hope to see the usual faces there. Good times ahead.
